PANGBORN, JOSEPH PHILLIPS

Daily Appeal – 8/07/1867 – A Tribute to the Dead – It has pleased the Supreme Ruler of the Universe to call from the shores of time, the bosom of a beloved family and the society of devoted friends our friend and neighbor, John Phillips Pangborn. I am sensible that no effort of mine could pay an adequate tribute to the ennobling traits of character which has ever distinguished him in all his intercourse and associations with men. But he is dead. He had been sick but a few days. His physician, Dr. L.L. Hague, together with numerous friends done all that could be done to alleviate his sufferings, but to no avail. He expired Wednesday evening July 31st, at his residence in Brown’s Valley, with congestion of the brain. Mr. Pangborn was born in Vermont, and was at the time of his death aged 36 years, 11 months and 20 days. His parents emigrated to Iowa in an early day, where his father, brothers and sisters still remain. The deceased came to California in 1849, and was among the pioneer settlers of Browns Valley, where he married and leaves a family and a host of warmhearted friends to mourn his loss. We feel that the community has lost a true friend and a benevolent and noble hearted man, and that the Good Templars, an Order to which he was an active member, has lost a sincere and worthy Brother. The members of the Order took charge of the remains, an on Friday August 2d all business houses in the place were closed; also, the Superintendents of the different Quartz mills caused a suspension of operations in token of respect to his memory, in which vocation as a miner he was well versed. His remains were taken to the Church, which was densely crowded, and at 9 o’clock a.m. service was had by the Rev. Mr. Parkhurst, thence to the graveyard, where we paid our last tribute of respect of all that was mortal of our friend and brother. Seldom have we witnessed so large a concourse of people, and the heart-felt sorrow manifested by all would indicate that he died without an enemy. We feel that he has left to those that loved and admired him a name which they will hereafter fondly cherish, and may the trusting faith of the Christian, so beautifully sublime in it’s perfect resignation to the will of Providence, enable the doting wife and beloved children who had looked to him for a sustaining arm, to feel “that He doeth all things well. “ Who is prepared to say that his sun went down to soon ? We have paid the last tribute to his worth, and have borne him to the grave and left him wrapped in his quiet slumbers. We look now upon his tomb, and there his once active form lies cold and still, robed in the habiliments of the grave; his genial eye is closed, and his hand so wont to grasp our own is still and calm in death; the Soul which inspired it has fled; his cheek is no longer flushed with hope and he has no part in anything that is done on earth. How forcibly this event reminds us that we are but voyagers on the stormy ocean of life; and we feel that he has only crossed the ocean of time to another land and a fairer clime, and that his spirit will rise above the din and mists of earth and float amid the sunlight of Heaven. Brown’s Valley, August 2d, 1867  Wm. M. J.    (B. S.)

Tomb received a telephone message this afternoon from the Coroner at Chico, informing him of the death of John H. Pender, of this city, which occurred in that city yesterday after noon.  No particulars of the death were received further than that he arrived in Chico Sunday evening in a very weak condition. – Mr. Pender left this city on the local train Sunday evening with the intention of going to Tuscan Springs, near Red Bluff, and nothing was heard of him until the announcement of his death to-day. – Deceased was one of the early pioneers of this city and for many years was engaged in freight traffic between Marysville and the mountain towns, and in later years he conducted a fruit and fish stand on Third street. – His wife died in this city a few years ago and was buried in Sacramento, and just previous to his death the old gentleman requested that his remains be sent to that city for interment.  He was 80 years of age.

Daily Democrat – 08/03/1894, p. 1 – Died at Tuscan Springs – J. H. Pender, a man about 80 years of age, died at Tuscan Springs, August 2d.  He went to the springs several days ago in poor health, hoping to regain his health.  The deceased was an uncle by marriage, of Clay, Charlie and Will Hughes.  The body will be taken to Sacramento for burial.  Coroner West held an inquest on the body and the jury found a verdict of death from natural causes.—Red Bluff News.

Pender Pays the Debt of Nature. – ON HIS WAY TO THE SPRINGS. – The Old Man Gives Up the Struggle—Something of His Early Career. – Another of Marysville’s landmarks has been removed, and one of her grand old pioneer citizens has crossed the narrow stream and joined thousands of his fellow travelers in the great valley beyond. – Frank J. Tomb received a telephone message yesterday from Red Bluff, stating that John H. Pender of this city had died the night previous. – Mr. Pender left this city last Sunday evening for Red Bluff, being on his way to Tuscan Springs, where, he told his friends, that he intended to remain as long as his money held out.  Whether he died at Red Bluff or at the springs was not ascertained. – The deceased was one of Marysville’s early settlers, having taken up his residence here about the year 1852.  He ran peddling wagons to the mountains for a number of years, and dealt extensively in fish. – He had a number of men employed in early days killing fish at Rio Vista, and Joe Murphy, the well-known comedian, was one of those that he employed. – In later years he conducted a produce store and fish market on Third street, and ran a wagon with merchandise to the mountain towns.  He was also interested in the Catskill mine at Bangor, where he lost nearly all his savings. – His wife died in this city a few years ago.  She was engaged in the millinery business, and she was buried in Sacramento, where her daughter, Mrs. Murray, the wife of a well-known horseman, resides. – The old gentleman has often expressed a wish to be buried in the same lot as his wife.  He had no relatives in this city since his wife’s death, except Miss Fannie Whitmore, who was a relative of his wife, and who was recently married to Mr. Mills, a former resident of Linda township. – The deceased was a native of New York and 80 years of age.  He was honest and straightforward in all his business transactions, and leaves behind an honorable record.

PRINDLE, CHARLES THOMAS

Marysville Evening Democrat - 1/22/1916, p1 - Friends Hope Their Spirits Are United In Death - "The hand that reapeth one, reapeth the other," and such was the case with Charles Thomas Prindle, an aged man who died at the Yuba County hospital, Saturday morning.  Lingering but a few hours after the death of his aged sweetheart, Miss Emma Stammer, who died Friday at the county infirmary, Prindle, through the infirmities of old age, sickness, and grieving over the loss of his sweetheart, was anxiously awaiting the call of the Grim Reaper.  And now in the place of the wedding there will be a double funeral.  Mention has been made of the many attempts of this aged couple to be married, but who were prevented through illness to one or the other.  God has been kind in taking both under His protection, and it is hoped that they will meet again and live a life of happiness in the domain of the Ruler of the Universe. - Prindle was 81 years of age, and for many years carried on a blacksmithing business at Strawberry Valley, where he also served for some time as postmaster.  He has been an inmate of the Yuba County infirmary for two years.  He was a native of New York, and was quite well known in the foothill section, where he had many friends.  He will be remembered by the older residents of the county. - R. E. Bevan & Son have charge of the remains and they will hold a double funeral of both Prindle and Miss Stammer from their chapel Sunday afternoon.

“ A full, rich nature, free to trust,
                Truthful, and almost sternly just,
                Impulsive, earnest, prompt to act,
And make her generous thought a fact,
Keeping, with many a light disguise,
                The secret of self sacrifice.
Oh! Heart, sore tried! Thou hast the best,
                That Heaven itself could give thee --- rest;
Rest from all bitter thoughts and things!
How many a loved one’s blessing went,
With thee beneath the low, green tent,
Whose curtain never outward swings! ”

PURDY, PATRICK

Marysville Daily Appeal – 8/12/1899, p 4 – Tragedy at New York Flat:  John Purdy Suicides After Attempting to Murder His Wife – A tragedy occurred in New York Township, near Forbestown, in the northern part of this county, at an early hour yesterday morning, when John Purdy killed himself, after making an attempt to kill his wife.  He also set fire to his house and barn. – The tragedy was the result of a family quarrel. – Mrs. Purdy received only a slight wound in the arm.  Her maiden name was Josephine Williams and she is a relative of the Laverty family, who reside near Browns Valley. – Some relatives of the parties, who were working in the local cannery, have gone to the scene.

Marysville Daily Appeal – 8/15/1899, p 4 – Laid to His Long Rest – The funeral of the late John Purdy took place at Brownsville Sunday under the auspices of the Forester’s Lodge of Forbestown, of which society deceased was a member.  The funeral cortege was the largest seen in that section for years.  The interment was had in the Brownsville cemetery.

Marysville Daily Appeal – 8/16/1899, p 1 – A Man To Blame:  Correspondence Bearing on the Purdy Suicide Near Forbestown:  Indignation Prevails:  Suspected His Wife of Intrigue and Returned Home Unexpectedly the Morning of the Tragedy. – No event in the history of Forbestown and its surrounding country ever created so much excitement, indignation and general sorrow as has been caused by the untimely and tragic death of James Purdy. – Purdy was a young man of exemplary habits, loved and respected by all who knew him.  He has been looked upon as a model husband, who not only furnished his little home with all the luxuries that makes home pleasant, but was kind, loving and considerate, and seemed to worship his wife with an idolatrous love. – For the past five years Mr. Purdy has been employed at the Gold Bank mine, where he was one of the steadiest and most reliable men in the mine.  He was a loved and honored member of the Order of Foresters. – The little home of James Purdy was generally looked upon as one of the sunniest spots to be found in the foothills.  But it seems that with all the watchful care and protecting love of a husband, a human viper gained admission within the sacred precincts of this family circle.  The time came when the husband discovered the true character of the visitor, he was then ordered to leave the place and never again show himself on the premises. – The husband’s occupation called him away during the entire day.  It is supposed that on the morning of the tragedy Purdy had become convinced that the orders and warning he had given were not respected, so he took his dinner pail and went to the mine as usual, but instead of going to work, he complained of a pain in his side and requested the foreman, Wm. Hampton, to grant him a lay-off for a few days.  He went back home and entered his house and a few minutes afterwards a shot was heard and Mrs. Purdy was seen running from the place screaming.  Mr. Purdy soon followed with a shot-gun in his hand.  By this time, Mrs. Purdy was some distance off, and after the second shot was fired at her, he returned to the house and secured his rifle.  Then he set fire to the house and barn, went outside and stood behind a cedar tree and watched the fire until satisfied that everything would be burned.  He went about twenty feet from the tree and put the muzzle of the rifle to his head and blew the entire top off.  – In the mean time Mrs. Purdy had been taken into Mrs. Tom Hooker’s place and placed on a bed. – The first shot fired at Mrs. Purdy took effect in the arm, making an ugly wound.  The second charge did but little injury. – She was removed to her father’s home, where according to the report this morning, she is resting quite comfortably ad getting along as well as could be expected. – Mrs. Purdy is the daughter of Samuel Williams, now a resident of New York School District, formerly a resident of Sugar Loaf district near Bangor.  She has two sisters and three brothers. – James Purdy’s parents reside at the top of Hansonville Hill.  He leaves one brother and two sisters. – The remains were interred in the Evergreen Cemetery at Brownsville yesterday at eleven o’clock, under the auspices of the Forbestown Order of Foresters.  The funeral was the largest ever witnessed at Brownsville. – Reporter, Forbestown, August 14, 1899.

PURKISS, JOHN HENRY

Marysville Daily Appeal - 10/10/1900, p1 - Maj. Purkiss Dead - Passing of One of the Oldest Residents of Browns Valley - Settled There in '52 - Succumbed to the Infirmities of Age Last Monday at His Home - "Keep your chickens off'n this lot - Or else you'll find 'm in Purkiss's pot." - A little ramshackle old gate bearing above it an inverted barrel stave from which hangs, just high enough to clear the head of the chance visitor an iron pot, the whole surmounted with the rhyme above noted, carefully inscribed by means of a stencil and marking pot upon a board, has marked the outer boundaries of the possessions of Major John H. Purkiss, one of the oldest of the settlers in the little, old mining town of Browns Valley, now for many years. - Many are the chance sojourners who, happening in the valley at one time or another in the course of the long years which have marked the residence of the Major in that foothill village, have happened upon the sign, laughed at the humor therein expressed and bent upon uncovering the possessor of such poetic instinct have invaded the precincts claimed by the scribe as his home there to meet and converse with a gigantic figure suggestive of a time now long gone bye, when the men who came to the Golden State were those of mighty brawn. - Six foot three was the Major with a figure that stood as upright as a pine tree.  A long, white beard, set off a face bearing lineaments that spoke of a strong personality possessed in years long past when with fellow miners he delved for and found fortune on Park's Bar.  Thousands then had the Major.  The glittering golden sands had lined his sluice until to a man of his environment he was rich beyond peradventure.  He pulled stakes and sought other scenes, but nowhere in his wanderings could he find a spot which for charm could equal his old associations in the foothills of Yuba county.  After a brief sojourn back again returned the wanderer to the "Valley," becoming interested extensively in ditch undertakings, from which his income was many hundreds per month.  Aggressive competitors as time went on, brought worry to the miner, who finally by virtue of his troubles became known as slightly "touched," and who, after finally closing out his ditch interests to his rivals, settled down to live out his string on the results obtained.  Within the confines of his little sphere the Major once only easy when engaged in weighty undertakings now became content to follow horticulture on a small scale, and occupied amidst his trees and vines and honey bees, no thought took he of fleeting time, nor passing events, satisfied to witness each day the rising sun and each evening its decline, marking only the effect of the different seasons upon his garden flowers and fruit buds.  As years went on apace, marvelous were the tales that the Major could unfold of wealth beyond description, of which he had knowledge and would one day uncover down on the old Yuba and with a seriousness that never failed to impress, the casual visitor was informed that he, too, might share if he would when the right time came.  And now the time has come for as he lay asleep the other night a figure clad in shimmering drapery approached his humble couch and beckoning him arise led forth the way.  Out and onward over hill and valley, upward and away from the trials and tribulations of earthly cares proceeded they, the figure ever in the lead beckoning the old man eagerly following until enveloped in a cloud of golden hue came oblivion. - In the humble cabin when morning came all was still.  The few domestic animals betrayed nervousness at the failure of their master to appear.  A passing neighbor noting the unrest of the house dog paused in passing and loosing the rude door fastening gazed within to find that the old Major at last had made his strike and had won, who knows but what the greatest of blessings, eternal rest. - John Henry Purkiss died at Browns Valley Monday night, aged 67 years.  Deceased was a native of England and came to California in 1851, settling shortly afterwards in Browns Valley which place he had made his home with but a short interval ever since.  He was naturalized in the court of Yuba county in July, 1871. - In the course of his long career in Yuba county deceased had been respectively a miner, a ditch owner and agent and latterly a horticulturist on a small scale.  He leaves to mourn his loss three brothers, F. C., A. C. and C. W. Purkiss. - The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Murrish of Honcut, from his late residence at Browns Valley to-day at 2 o'clock.  Interment Browns Valley cemetery.
