Marysville Daily Democrat - 2/6/1892, p1 - A Sad Case - The case of the death of John H. Alford, who was buried from his home in this city yesterday, is a sad one and deserving of more than passing notice. The family, consisting of father, mother and seven children, came to Marysville a few months ago to reside. They rented a little cottage at the corner of Fourth and J streets, where the children that were old enough were sent to school, the youngest child is four years old and the oldest only fourteen. He had no means and found employment only part of the time, but was a man of good habits and industrious, being willing to work at any kind of honest labor. Death came suddenly, leaving the poor little woman and helpless children without means or provisions to live on, but some of the good people of Marysville have assisted them and they have not suffered, yet they need more help.

Appeal
Democrat - 8/19/1940, p2 - Loma Rica Woman Takes Own Life - Apparently seized
with despondency after starting dinner preparations Sunday evening, Mrs. Myrtle
May Allen, 47, ended her life at the Allen home, three-quarters of a mile
from Loma Rica store, by firing a .22-calibre rifle bullet into her
temple, Coroner J. P. Sullivan reported Monday. - Mrs. Allen and her
husband, Thomas F. Allen, had returned home late in the afternoon after
visiting the former's mother, Mrs. A. Berg, in Hallwood district to extend a
dinner invitation. Mrs. Berg did not return with them. - Allen said his
wife, who had been receiving treatments for illness over a considerable period
of time, suddenly remarked, "Life is not worth living." Allen
told the coroner he thought little of the remark, and was not alarmed some
minutes later when he [sic] wife arose and walked into the bedroom. She
paused by the doorway and said, "Goodbye, Tom." - Within a short
time, Allen was startled by the sound of a rifle shot. Entering the
bedroom, he found his wife lying on the floor, with his small-bore rifle laying
alongside her. - Deputy Coroner Franklin Moorhead, who took charge of the body,
said death was apparently instantaneous, the bullet entering the right temple
and lodging in the brain. The side of the temple was powder-burned. - The
Allens came to Loma Rica a year ago in March, it was learned by Sheriff C. J.
McCoy, who was called to investigate Sunday night. They formerly lived in

ATCHISON, MARTHA
Marysville Evening Herald 11/01/1853 OBITUARY Died, at
Fosters Bar, Oct. 28th, of convulsions caused by dentation, Martha, infant
daughter of J. H. and Jemima Atchison, aged thirteen months and sixteen days.
Although an infant she had twined herself around the hearts of many friends of
the family of which she was the pride and joy, and has left a void in that
family circle that can never be filled. Yet, weep not, fond Mother, and lament
not, little Sisters, though all that was mortal of thy little daughter and
sister is covered by the cold clods of the valley; yet her pure spirit has gone
to join the myriads who surround the throne of our Heavenly Father, and regret
not that she in her purity has passed away from this vale of tears, for hath
not our Saviour said, Suffer little children to come unto to me, for such is
the Kingdom of Heaven.
There was a voice of wail and woe
In deaths still chamber heard,
And the mothers heart beat faint and low
Like the heart of a wounded bird,
Neath the Sierras frowning brow---
Where lightening wreaths in fiery crown,
There is a new made grave, that now
Shows where a new born star went down. Fosters Bar. Oct. 30,
1853 (B. S.)
