AARON, CHARLES FRANCIS
Appeal Democrat – 9/7/1953, p 1 – C. F. Aaron, Yuba Native, Dies At Home – Charles Francis (Frank) Aaron, 77, a lifelong resident of Marysville, died last night at 9:55 o’clock after an illness of several months. He succumbed in his home at 710 D St., Marysville. – Born December 1, 1875, Aaron attended Marysville schools, picking up some dollars during his high school years delivering the Marysville Democrat by ponyback to its Yuba City subscribers. – Thereafter he attended Stanford University, having for a roommate during part of that time ex-President Herbert Hoover, and graduated in 1897 with an A.B. degree and a degree in electrical engineering. – Prior to graduation he had a position lined up with Yuba River Power Company, predecessor of the Pacific Gas & Electric Co., but by reason of the death of his father on April 27, 1897, he was called upon to abandon his chosen career of electrical engineering and to take over the interests of his father. – Hub Businessman: He bought into the Fuller and O’Brien real estate and insurance firm with offices in the Ellis building. Sometime later the remaining member of the firm, James K. O’Brien, former president of the Yuba-Sutter County Chamber of Commerce and so-called “Mayor of Smartville,” retired and Aaron carried on the business alone until 1926, he took in as a partner the late John H. Fuller, son of the former Jesse B. Fuller, and conducted the business in partnership until Fuller’s death in 1947. Since then Aaron has been associated with W. W. Burke and Leta Rucker in carrying on the real estate and insurance business. – One of the founders of the Yuba-Sutter Board of Fire Underwriters, Aaron throughout his career had been active in the scientific advancement of the insurance business. For many years he had been a member of the State Farm Committee and in that capacity had been one of the authors of the Standard Farm Forms now in use in this State. – Civic Affairs: Frank Aaron had played a quiet but active role in the political and financial development of Marysville. He was a former member of the city council, vice president and general manager of the Marysville Water Co., president of the Northern California Bank of Savings, president of he Marysville Hotel Co., and one of the founders as well as the president of Marysville Savings and Loan Association, a position from which he recently retired in favor of Martin Hector, former manager of the First Federal Savings and Loan Assn. of San Jose. – Aaron came from a pioneer Marysville family. His father, Frank W. H. Aaron, a native of England, always regretted the storm which kept his ship outside the Golden Gate until Jan. 2, 1850, thereby depriving him of the satisfaction of being a genuine ‘49er. Arriving in San Francisco, he answered an ad for an assayer by the late Dave Knight, donor to the City of Marysville of Knight Park, site of the high school and junior college, and shortly thereafter the elder Aaron settled in Marysville. – A number of years later he married Mary Musgrove Bobo, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Charles D. Bobo of Union Scot, Carolina. On Jan. 16, 1875, they purchased from William B. Latham Jr., the family home at 704 D St., and it was there the following December that Frank Aaron was born. – He married Bertha Cornforth on Dec. 2, 1903, and thereafter purchased the Rideout home and moved it to the lot adjoining the residence of his parents. Here he and his wife resided until her death in 1920, and there Frank Aaron continued to reside until his own death. - Neither he nor Mrs. Aaron left any known relatives, and it is thought that the bulk of his estate will go for charitable purposes. - Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Hutchison's Colonial chapel, Marysville, with Rev. Victor Hatfield, rector of St. John's Episcopal church officiating. Members of the Masonic Corinthian lodge will participate in the rites. - Entombment will be at the masoleum [sic] at the Yuba City cemetery. - Aaron had requested that those wishing to send remembrances may contribute to St. John's church Memorial fund or other worthy funds of their choice.
AARON, FRANK WILLIAM HOWARD
Marysville Daily Democrat - Tue 4/27/1897, p1 - Death of F. W. H. Aaron - Succumbed to an Epileptic Fit About Noon To-day - Frank W. H. Aaron departed this life quite suddenly at a few minutes before the noon hour to-day at his residence, corner D and Seventh streets. When his physician, Dr. Powell, reached his side, he had passed beyond medical aid, the result of an epileptic fit. Mr. Aaron was subject to these attacks for twenty years past, therefore his sudden passing cannot be said to be a surprise to his family or the physician. However, the news of his demise, coming unexpectedly, was quite a severe shock to Mr. Aaron's many friends, and to the community in general. - From J. C. Bradley, who shares Mr. Aaron's office in the Water Works building, it is learned that deceased came down town earlier than usual this morning. He rode his wheel to the office door and, stepping inside, asked if any one had been inquiring for him. On receiving a reply in the negative Mr. Aaron said to Mr. Bradley that he need not expect him to visit the office again during the forenoon. He did not complain of feeling ill, and Mr. Bradley did not ask for explanations. - Later Dr. Powell met Mr. Aaron at the postoffice and advised him to retire to his room, as his appearance gave signals of approaching illness. Mr. Aaron obeyed, and for the major portion of the time between 11 and 12 o'clock rested on a lounge at his home and read to his wife from a magazine. The final attack was of but few minutes duration. - Deceased was a native of England, and 66 years of age. By profession he was an assayer and for many years was connected with an assay office which was located in the building now occupied as the postoffice. He was Secretary of the old Marysville Savings Bank during its entire existence. In the last fifteen years of his life Mr. Aaron's principal business was loaner of monies. - He was a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity, belonging to Corinthian Lodge No. 9, F. and A. M., Marysville Council No. 3, R. and S.M. and Washington Chapter No. 13, R. A. M. Beside his wife, a son, Frank, who is about to graduate from the electrical department at Stanford University, survives. - The funeral will take place from the family residence at 2 o'clock to-morrow afternoon under the auspices of Corinthian Lodge No. 9, F. and A.M. - The interment will be in the City cemetery. - Last December Mr. Aaron was treated for a severe spell of sickness, similar to that which ended in his death to-day.

Covillaud last evening. Accompanying the will is the petition of Mary M. Aaron for letters testamentary. He leaves his entire estate, valued at about $20,000, to his wife and son, Charles Francis Aaron. - The property consists of the homestead on Seventh and D streets, the Crowell & Jenkins' market and bakery adjoining, and a house on D street, Sperry Flour stock, Woolen Mill stock, and an interest in the Colmena Colony Company.

ALLEN, EDWARD
Sacramento Daily Union - 3/27/1876 - A Sad Suicide - The Marysville Appeal of March 26th gives the following particulars of a late suicide: A startling and sad suicide was committed at Mooney Flat, on Friday, the 24th instant, at about 8 o'clock in the evening. The cause and particulars of the affair were related to us as follows: Edward Allen and Miss Esther Brown, daughter of David Brown, were engaged to be married. The nuptial day was fixed for the evening which proved to be Allen's last. The license had been procured, and the minister was notified to be present. The parents of Miss Brown objecting to the consummation of the marriage, it had been arranged by the young couple to have it come off at a neighbor's house by the name of Currie. Everything was believed to be all right until Friday morning, when the deceased called at the residence and requested to see his affianced. An interview was denied young Allen, who was informed that Miss Brown had succumbed to the wishes of her mother, and would decline the alliance. Allen then insisted upon having an interview with the young lady, as he could not believe the statement. He was, however, denied an interview, but later in the day observing Miss Brown and Miss Parsons start off on foot for Smartsville, he followed, overtook the young ladies, and addressing the affianced asked her if what he was told at her house was true? Miss Brown then frankly informed her lover that she had been induced by her mother to break the engagement - - her mother declaring that her marriage with him would cause her death. Young Allen is reported to have simply replied, "You had better live with your mother." This last interview occurred about the middle of the afternoon, and from that time till the fatal shot was fired, Allen appeared to be suffering greatly from the disappointment, and was in a desperate and reckless mental condition. He went home, procured a large revolver, and told his brother as he passed out of the house, "You will see me no more alive: procure me a respectable coffin, and use my money in my trunk to defray the expense of my funeral." Friends used every effort to calm his broken spirit, but to no avail. At about 8 o'clock, while promenading in the yard of Currie's in rear of the residence where he was to have been married he placed the revolver to his heart and fired the fatal shot. The deceased was 22 years of age, industrious, temperate and a worthy young man. A father, mother, brother and two sisters mourn his sad end.

Berg, in Hallwood district to extend a dinner invitation. Mrs. Berg did not return with them. - Allen said his wife, who had been receiving treatments for illness over a considerable period of time, suddenly remarked, "Life is not worth living." at his home Saturday morning. He had been ill only briefly and his death was a
painful surprise to his many friends there and in Marysville. - Allnett was for
many years a leader in his community. For 25 years he operated a meat market
there, then became the town's merchant. He had been prominent in the Odd Fellows
lodge, serving for years before his death as secretary. He was also a leader in
the Townsend club of the district. He was 58 years old. - Surviving are his

ANTHONY, JAMES M.
Marysville Appeal - Tue 7/11/1911, p1 - Yuba River Claims Its Annual Victim - J. M. Anthony of Portland Drowns - Badly Mangled Body Recovered After Eighteen Hours Search - Foul Play Theory Abandoned - The Yuba river has again reaped its yearly toll. This time the unfortunate is James M. Anthony of Portland, Ore., who was drowned while bathing at about 5:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Anthony's body lay in the water at least eighteen hours before it was finally brought to the surface in a badly mangled condition by Ben Manford of Sutter county, who used grappling hooks. Deputy Coroner John Hocking was on the spot at the time and following the recovery of the body, which was about noon yesterday, ordered it taken to the undertaking establishment of Kelly Bros. An autopsy was held later in the afternoon to determine, if possible, the means by which Anthony came to his death. - Coroner Hocking gave as his opinion last night that Anthony was drowned, and that the mutilated condition of the body was due entirely to the concussion of giant powder, which was used by Chester Lee Sunday afternoon in an effort to bring the body to the surface. The body of Anthony was in a terribly mangled state. Practically every bone in the man's body was broken from the hips up. The left eye was torn out, both arms broken, the spine dislocated, the lower jaw broken in two places and the head crushed to a pulp. - After an examination at the river Monday forenoon, it was believed that Anthony had met foul play. A short while afterwards Officer Sayles arrested Ed Herringer, who was with Anthony at the time of his death. The man was locked up in the city jail, where he was held until 7 o'clock last evening, when he was liberated. - In the clothing of Anthony was found a number of postcards, one of which was addressed to "Mrs. J. Anderson, Portland, Ore." In a small memorandum was the name of "Miss Gunla Vicenti, 707 Market street, San Francisco." A gold signet ring on his left hand bore the initials, "J.M.A." According to Herringer, Anthony had told him several times that he was from Chicago, and had also admitted that he had a brother working in a saloon in Portland. Outside of the few personal belongings, now in the hands of the coroner, Anthony apparently had nothing else in the world. His suit, a blue serge was shabby, while his tan shoes were torn about the toes. Anthony had also worn a light hat and a black necktie, all of which he piled on the bank before his fatal swim. - For the purpose of ascertaining something definite about the man, Coroner Hocking sent the following message to the chief of police at Portland last night: - "John M. Anthony drowned here Sunday; body recovered. Claimed to have brother, barkeeper in your city. If possible locate brother and wire us. His address in pocket memorandum, James M. Anthony, Portland, Ore." - It appears that Anthony came down from Chico with J. Arthur about three days ago and while here both men secured employment as dishwashers at the American restaurant. Arthur says that Anthony spoke little about his family connections. - Anthony's body was recovered about sixty feet below the spot where he sank Sunday afternoon. A number of trips were made up and down the river in a boat by Ben Manford, and it was while the boat was drifting past the spot that the huge hooks caught in the leg of Anthony and brought him to the surface.
Marysville Evening Democrat - Tue 7/11/1911, p1 - Anthony's Relatives Have Not Been Located - No answer, as yet, has been received from the chief of police of Portland, Oregon, in response to a telegram sent last evening by Deputy Coroner John Hocking telling of the drowning of James M. Anthony in the Yuba river Sunday night and asking if any information could be given regarding the relatives of the young man. The post cards found in the clothes of Anthony led the officials of this city to believe that Anthony has relatives residing in Portland and every effort is being made to locate them, as it will be impossible to hold the body very long. From one of the men who was slightly acquainted with Anthony the officials have learned that the drowned man was heard to say that he had a brother connected in some way with a saloon in Portland. In Anthony's pockets were several post cards bearing views of the interior and exterior of the Lotus Buffet, 127 Sixth street, Portland, and it is probable that this is the place referred to by him. From some source, which this paper has been unable to verify, comes the news, or at least supposition, that the unfortunate man has wealthy relatives living in the Northwest. Several such stories have been circulated but they are not authentic as nothing that would substantiate or verify these statements has been received from the outside. - A close examination made at the Coroner's office Monday afternoon disclosed the fact that almost, if not every bone in Anthony's body, was broken by the force of the dynamite that was thrown in the river with the hopes of raising it to the surface. Therefore it is reasonable to believe that one of the shots must have lit very close if not right on the body. Some difference of opinion exists as to why the concussion did not float Anthony's body but it is generally believed that it was held by a snaw. - An inquest to determine the exact cause of death will be held at the Coroner's office Wednesday evening at which time the testimony of several witnesses will be taken. Ed Hersinger, the youth arrested by Officer Sayles yesterday is still being held at the city jail. As he was an eye witness to the tragedy he will probably be held until after the inquest. If relatives of deceased are not heard from by Wednesday evening interment will be made in this city.
Marysville Appeal - Thu 7/13/1911, p1 - Drowning Was Accidental - "Accidental drowning" was the verdict given out by Deputy Coroner Hocking last night following an inquest held over the body of James M. Anthony, who was drowned in the Yuba river Sunday afternoon. Ed Herringer, who was with Anthony at the time of his death, and who has been confined in the city jail pending the outcome of the inquiry, was a witness at the proceedings last night. Herringer related the details leading up to the drowning of his comrade. He was later released from custody. - The funeral will be held from the undertaking establishment of Kelly Bros. this morning. Interment will be in the City cemetery.
Marysville Evening Democrat - Thu 7/13/1911, p1 - Accidental Death Verdict of Jury - An inquest was held over the remains of the late James M. Anthony at the Coroner's office last night at 7:30 o'clock and the report brought in by the jury was as follows: We as the jurors that [find] that the deceased's name was James M. Anthony and that he was about 24 years of age, nativity unknown, and that he came to his death in the Yuba river on Sunday, July 9th, 1911, by being accidentally drowned while bathing. We further find that the mutilation of the body was due to the powder used to raise the body from the bottom of the river. The following acted as jurors: Harry C. Reynolds, foreman, R. L. Hutchins, M. O. Sherman, Tom Bennett, H. Magruder, A. Andross, and F. M. Lipp. The remains were interred in the city cemetery this afternoon.

ARMSTEAD, ALBERT HAMILTON
Appeal Democrat - 9/24/1927, p1 - Funeral for A. H. Armstead 2 p.m. Sunday - Funeral services for the late A. H. Armstead, mayor of Wheatland for many years, who was killed in an automobile accident at Wheatland Thursday evening, will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Odd Fellows Hall in Wheatland. The body will be interred in the Wheatland cemetery by Lipp & Sullivan. - The inquest held at Sheridan yesterday afternoon resulted in a verdict of accidental death. Coroner Colin B. Hislop of Auburn, Placer county, officiated. - Dr. F. C. Jackson of Yuba City, whose car struck the truck on which Armstead and Roy Cass had just backed out of the Armstead orchard onto the highway told of the circumstances. He was traveling south on the highway at a speed of 38 miles an hour when he saw the truck back out from a clump of trees in front of him. He sounded his horn and jammed on all his brakes. - The crash sent Armstead through the windshield of his truck and broke his neck. The Jackson car was shunted through a fence and up against the embankment of the Southern Pacific railroad. - F. L. Mason of San Francisco driving behind the Jackson car, verified the speed. - Measurements taken at the scene showed that the Jackson car had slid along on locked wheels for 110 feet, starting when nearly in the middle of the highway and angling off to the left side as it approached the truck, being on the left side when it struck. - With Dr. Jackson were Mrs. Jackson and W. ASHLEY, JAY A.
Appeal Democrat - 4/13/1943, p1 - Jay A. Ashley Passes at 85 - Jay A. Ashley, for years one of Sutter county's most enterprising citizens, died this morning in the Rideout hospital, where he had been under treatment recently. He was 85 years old and had been retired from business for some time, and from his bird and animal project south of Yuba City for a number of months. - Ashley was the founder of the Ashley Manufacturing Co., which he established modestly in 1898, and which grew in proportions until in a few years it was employing up to 25 men. It is still being operated, but its lines of products have changed from time to time as conditions changed. It is one of the best equipped machine shops in the central valley. - Ashley was born in Ohio and was a railroad apprentice there before coming to California in 1883 and locating in Sutter county. He served some time as engineer for the Stat Milling Co. here. - Pioneered in Building Orchard Equipment - His manufacturing company designed and built orchard and dry yard equipment that was widely used, being constructed to fit the needs of the growers. Ladders of the Ashley designs were produced at a rate of 8000 to 10,000 a year for awhile and shipped all over the coast. - Ashley married Miss Emma Van Dorn of Yuba county, who preceded him in death in 1930. Until recently he continued to occupy the home he had built south of Yuba City, where the machine shop is located, but advancing age caused him to move to Yuba City, to the home of Mrs. Ethel Ashley. At his home, after retiring from business, he conducted an extensive bird and animal farm, along with his orchards, growing many varieties of poultry, pheasants, peacocks and rare birds. He also had a paddock of deer obtained from Treasure island at the close of the exposition. - A son, Russell Ashley, now operates the manufacturing company. Another son is Byron Ashley of Vallejo. A daughter is Mrs. Carmen Buehler of Oakland. Funeral arrangements, in charge of Ullrey memorial chapel, are awaiting arrival of the absent relatives.
ATCHISON, MARTHA
Marysville Evening Herald – 11/01/1853 – OBITUARY – Died,
at Foster’s Bar, Oct. 28th, of convulsions caused by dentation, Martha, infant
daughter of J. H. and Jemima Atchison, aged thirteen months and sixteen days.
Although an infant she had twined herself around the hearts of many friends of
the family of which she was the pride and joy, and has left a void in that
family circle that can never be filled. Yet, weep not, fond Mother, and lament
not, little Sisters, though all that was mortal of thy little daughter and
sister is covered by the cold clods of the valley; yet her pure spirit has gone
to join the myriads who surround the throne of our Heavenly Father, and regret
not that she in her purity has passed away from this vale of tears, for hath not
our Saviour said, “Suffer little children to come unto to me, for such is the
Kingdom of Heaven.”
There was a voice of wail and woe
In death’s still chamber heard,
And the mother’s heart beat faint and low
Like the heart of a wounded bird,
‘Neath the Sierra’s frowning brow---
Where lightening wreaths in fiery crown,
There is a new made grave, that now
Shows where a new born star went down. Foster’s Bar. Oct. 30, 1853 (B.
S.)
