This one man cemetery is named for the sole occupant; Lewis Khord. Mr. Khord and another man were traveling along the Emigrant Trail in 1851 and camped for the night. The next morning, Mr. Khord was found to have passed away during the night. His friend buried him along the trail. Nothing is known of Mr. Khord or his friend, except for an obscure passage relating to the death in the History of Yuba County 1879 by Thompson & West.

His grave is beside the Emigrant Trail (within Spenceville Wildlife Refuge) just above the roadway of Smartville RD, between Hammonton-Smartville RD and the Grass Valley Gate of Beale AFB. A marker was erected by Parlor #6, Native Sons of the Golden West and Parlor #162, Native Daughters of the Golden West.
