Headstone Photos.

The following list was compiled by Cathie Manwell Adams, © 2006.

Lake Madrone Cemetery is located at the top of a knoll north of a horseshoe bend on the Oroville-Quincy Highway (Highway 162) just northeast of Lake Madrone.  Go 4/10 mile after the lake bridge.  There will be a sign for school bus stop 400 feet and a left curve in the road.  A dirt road on the left goes up an incline.  The entrance is not marked.  Less than 1/10 of a mile, there will be a residence on the left and the cemetery is directly across from it on the right.  This seems to be a private drive and dead ends at the cemetery and residence.

There appear to be approximately 12 graves with no markers (including 5 in the Nottingham plot).

This list was compiled using the following sources:

On site documentation by Kathy Sedler and Colleen Driscoll in February 2005 (including photos).  An “X” in the first column indicates a photo was taken.

Notes:

Hoad Family: John Henry Hoad was born in England 29 Dec 1803.  He married Sara Patterson on 26 Jun 1828 at St. Giles, Camberwell, Surrey, England.  John and Sara had a son also named John Henry, born 12 Feb 1831, in London, England.  Sara died in England and John Henry, Sr. and his son immigrated to the United States sometime before 1865.  John Henry, Sr. died 19 Dec 1888.  John Henry, Jr. married Mary Lucinda Mallory in 1865 in Nevada County, California.  John Henry, Jr. and Mary Lucinda had a son also named John Henry.  John Henry, Jr. died 10 Apr 1897 and is buried at Wyandotte.  The third John Henry was born 24/25 Jul 1870 at Merrimac, Peavine, Butte County.  He married Lula (Lulu) A. Boone on 18 Sep 1898 in Bangor, Butte County.  John Henry died 22 Dec 1937; he and Lula and their daughter Myrtle M. are buried at Bangor.

Nottingham Family: Ewell Walter Nottingham was born 29 Nov 1877 in Berry Creek, Butte County, California.  In 1910 he was a widower living with the Zink family (2nd wife’s relatives).  Sometime after 1910 he married Ida Belle Romer McCallan, whose first husband, James Williams McCallan (born c1876) died in September 1908.  James and Ida Belle married on 29 Nov 1898 and had five children: Anna N., Kathryn “Katie” (who later married a McWilliams), Margaret, James, and John.  Ida Belle was the daughter of John Lewis and Josephine (Zink) Romer.  She was born 14 Aug 1878 and died 10 Jul 1969.  It is likely that Ewell’s parents, his first wife, and Ida Belle are four of the five “Unknown” graves in the Nottingham plot.  It could not be established that Ewell and James were brothers although that does seem likely.
