Mr. Earl Ramey - researcher, historian, author, to name a few - left a priceless legacy in his work.  Among many other things, he was instrumental in compiling and coordinating what is now known as the "Ramey Index" in the California Room of the Yuba County Library.  This index was compiled on small cards (with notations under the headings) for many of the holdings in the California Room covering 1850-1950.  He and his team worked under extremely challenging conditions at times to make this resource available to the public.  They went through the books, newspapers, City Council minutes, and other documents recording headings and names, citing source of information. Without his tireless efforts much of the information in the California Room would not be found - or not as easily!  It is because of this work that countless people have been assisted in their research  long after Mr. Ramey left this earth.  In honor of this selfless man and his dedication to the preservation and increased access to genealogical and historical data, we wish to continue on with his work in the California Room, and bring it into the 21st century.

Besides the following list of planned projects, Kathy has put together a 3 page list of suggestions for increasing security measures in the California Room.  Many of those measures would be covered by achieving the goals below.  This win-win proposal is a solution to many of the current problems as identified by Kathy - who, for the past six years has given over 2,000 volunteer hours to help researchers and Library staff.

The "team" will be composed of volunteers who wish to help attain these goals in a collaborative effort:

Form a small group of highly trained individuals who will assist the public, and instruct other volunteers.

Perform an inventory of which resources are still available, those in need of further preservation measures, and advise which resources may be better preserved or stored in a State library facility.

Photocopy and/or digitally record resources which are in poor shape, need of repair, or are rare works.  Appropriately wrap and store the originals for safe-keeping.

Research and advise of any further resources that can or should be obtained to enhance the collection, and to raise funds to procure these items,  donating them to the California Room.

Encourage individuals to return any publicly-owned books and/or photographs that were once a part of the California Room, making them again available to the public for our collective use.

Assist in fulfilling requests for information contained in the California Room.

Provide the California Room with scheduled volunteers who will assist researchers.

Seek donations of appropriate resources (originals and copies) to enhance the current collection.

Maintain and update the pamphlet files.

Become knowledgeable regarding sources contained within the other portions of the library which could also benefit researchers.

Transcribe as many materials as possible which will be placed on the YubaRoots website, making it freely available to the public world-wide.  Some of these records may also be made into PDF files or digital images.  These records may also be included on the Yuba County Library's website as well.

  Schedule classes on various topics.

Seek funding and grants to accomplish these goals, working collaboratively with other organizations and agencies.

Seek education on the acceptable means for preservation of current and future holdings.

The research committee will also seek out other sources of historical and genealogical information in need of preservation and make every effort to provide this data to the public using a variety of means.  We will endeavor to work with other agencies, organizations and individuals for access to information as well as in obtaining grants toward common goals.  In all efforts, we will strive to make resources available to the public for their genealogical and historical research.  Volunteers will be an integral part of reaching these objectives.
