McBean, who declare they reside in southern California, but who came to Wheatland to earn a little extra money by picking hops, diphtheria has claimed its second victim in that family within twenty-four hours.  Irene McBean, aged two and a half years, passed away Sunday night from the ravages of the disease. - When news of the epidemic which threatened to spread to other families encamped on the hop fields there reached the ears of the town authorities of Wheatland an attempt was made to communicate with County Health Officer Dr. J. H. Barr, who is away on his vacation.  As no deputy had been appointed the state board of health was notified and yesterday County Clerk William Strief was notified by Donald H. Currie, secretary of the board, that Dr. A. D. Ellsworth of Wheatland had been instructed to take charge of the situation until further notice. - An attempt was made to have the family removed to this city, but as the pesthouse here is the property of the city and not the county, Dr. F. B. Tapley would not permit their removal here.  As a result Dr. Ellsworth was compelled to erect a tent in an isolated section of the town and remove the remainder of the family there.  One older boy is now suffering with the disease, but his case is aid to be light.  The parents have thus far escaped.  Every effort is being made to prevent the spread of the disease among the many families encamped there. - The two children were buried immediately under the direction of Coroner J. McCARTY, JOHN TEMPLETON

Daily California Express - 2/6/1860, p2 - Death of Mr. McCarty - Our citizens were startled Saturday morning with the announcement that John T. McCarty, Esq., had been suddenly stricken down by epilepsy, and was lying at the point of death.  It appears that Mr. McCarty arose as usual in the morning and went to breakfast.  Whilst sitting at the breakfast table, he felt some peculiar sensations, but did not consider it as anything serious.  After breakfast he returned to his chamber, and whilst caressing his little daughter, was suddenly seized with epilepsy, and sank upon a sofa.  Physicians were immediately called in, and did everything in their power to relieve him, but without avail.  About 1 o'clock P.M. he was relieved from his sufferings by death.  Mr. McCarty was one of the oldest citizens of Marysville, and by his gentlemanly deportment and sterling traits of character, had won a host of warm and devoted friends.  In his death this community has sustained a great and irreparable loss, and a void is thereby created which will be long and painfully felt. - Mr. McCarty, in the practice of his profession, the law, was universally esteemed by the members of the Bar, and in social life was possessed of a kind and amiable address, and a warm and genial heart, which secured for him an enviable position.  He had twice served as City Recorder, and as such gave great satisfaction.  He leaves a wife and child who have the heartfelt sympathy of the community in their bereavement. - His remains were followed to the grave yesterday afternoon by a large concourse of citizens, forming the largest procession ever witnessed in this city.  His Masonic brethren of this city and a large delegation of Knight Templars from Oroville accompanied his remains to their final resting place, and buried him with Masonic honors.

2/20/1932 - Fiji Founder, Old Timer Here, Moved By His Fraternity - Placed in a grave in the old Marysville cemetery at about the time the Civil War closed, the body of John Templeton McCarty, one of the five men who founded the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity in 1848, was removed Saturday to a new grave in Sierra View Memorial park, where it will be properly marked and given perpetual care. - The fraternity he helped found has been watching over his grave for years, and some time ago decided on the removal.  An appropriation was voted at its last international convention to proceed with it, and on Saturday R. C. Kennedy of Oakland, representing the Oakland Graduate chapter, which was delegated to the task, arrived in Marysville and executed the order. - Founded In 1848 - Arrangements had been made with Hugh Pryce Jones of the Jones funeral home in Yuba City to do the work, and a desirable spot had been selected in Sierra View. - In Washington-Jefferson university in Virginia back in 1848 five men formed the first chapter of Phi Gamma Delta.  John Templeton McCarty was one of the five.  When he had graduated he came west and settled in the pioneer gold city of Marysville, which had been founded only a short time before.  He became prominent in Masonic circles here an as a lawyer, and continued as a leading citizen until at the close of the Civil War he contracted pneumonia and died. - His fraternity had grown, but was not yet strong at that time.  Later, when it had spread through many universities and when it had accumulated traditions of its own, it sent representatives to Marysville and had a stone placed over the grave of McCarty.  Its newly recruited members were told of those five founders, and the California chapters are proud of the fact that one of the five honored men rests in California soil. - Daughter Gives Permit - Kennedy, who is a newspaper man in Oakland, connected with the Tribune, said Saturday that the Fijis, as members of the fraternity are known, had obtained deeds from a daughter of McCarty, Mrs. Tinker, of Los Angeles, giving permission to move the body.  A granddaughter of McCarty is Pearl Sindelar, actress, in Los Angeles. - Phi Gamma Delta became an international fraternity when it spread into Canada, where two chapters have been organized, making a total of 78 now existing, the others being in the United States.  It has thousands of members, graduates of the universities, scattered all over the world. - Henry Sackrider, Marysville photographer, was engaged to make photographs of the ceremony of moving the body.

McCREARY, JOHN

Daily Appeal – 09/25/1889, p. 3 – A SUDDEN DEATH. – John McCreary Found on the Streets Suffering and Dies at the Hospital. – John McCreary was picked up on C street near the car stables yesterday morning at shortly after 6 o’clock by Officer Finn.  He could not speak, and as he looked very much like he was suffering from one of his periodical sprees that he goes upon, he was taken to the station house.  Soon after his arrival there it was noticed that he gave evidence of much suffering, and on examining him it was found that a small silver tube was partially protruding from an opening in his throat.  Arrangements were at once made to take him to the hospital for treatment and shortly after he was taken out there.  It was not found necessary to provide any treatment as he died very soon after entering the hospital. – From all that could be learned it appears that the operation of tracheotomy was recently performed upon McCreary, who has been engaged in well-boring and house-moving in this vicinity for a number of years, and that immediately after he commenced to drink and took so little care of himself that the tube which was inserted in his throat worked out, and while he was drunk it came out and left him speechless and helpless.  He had a family here a year or two ago.

McCULLOCH, TINY (Tina?)

Daily Appeal - 7/10/1891, p3 - A Sad Accident - A Little Child Crushed to Death Beneath a Wheel. - The news reached this city last evening of an usually sad accident which occurred at Wheatland yesterday, resulting in the almost instant death of a little six-year-old daughter of Jasper McCulloch. - The McCulloch's reside in Wheatland, but for several days past Mrs. McCulloch has been engaged at W. O. Armstead's orchard drying apricots.  The orchard lies just outside of town and yesterday Mrs. McCulloch rode home on one of the heavily loaded fruit wagons.  As they drew near home her four little children ran out to meet her.  Tiny was particularly glad to see her mother returning, and in her anxiety to be the first, she stumbled and fell directly in front of the wheels. Before the boy who was driving could stop the horses the weighty wagons had run on to the child crushing her head into an almost unrecognizable mass and killing her instantly.  The poor mother is crazed with grief and refuses to be comforted.  Jasper McCulloch, the father of the unfortunate child, is well-known in the county.  At present he is away from home working on a harvester.

McDANIEL, ANN

Daily Appeal - Wed. 12/27/1905, p1 - Death of Mrs. Ann M'Daniel:  Passing of a Pioneer Woman Recalls  Tragic Incident of Years Ago. - Mrs. Ann McDaniel, widow of the late John McDaniel, died Christmas morning at 1028 D street, which has been her home for many  years.. - The funeral will take place at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon from the late residence, with the interment in Yuba City cemetery. - Mrs. McDaniel was born in County Waterford, Ireland, sixty-six years ago, and for forty-seven years had lived in California, having been for nearly all of this time a resident of Marysville.  She leaves surviving her two sons and four daughters, J. H. McDaniel of this city, George McDaniel of Modesto, Mrs. Lizzie Day of Sacramento, Mrs. Mary Crossley of San Francisco, Mrs. Harry Day and Mrs. Henry Blue of Marysville. - The death of this old and highly respected resident of Marysville recalls a tragic occurrence of many years ago, in which she played a courageous part.  In the fall of 1878 she was living with her husband at the Marysville racetrack, of which he was the lessee.  About four o'clock on Saturday morning, November 30th, of that year, she was awakened by someone attempting to force an outer door, but was met on the way by a burglar, who proved to be a Chinese named Ah Ben.  They grappled and a desperate struggle ensued, in the course of which the Chinaman inflicted a fatal wound on Mr. McDaniel with a chisel.  Hearing her husband's death-cry, Mrs. McDaniel rushed to his assistance and pulled the Chinese away from her husband.  The murderer then turned upon her, but she broke away from him.  Her Chinese cook then appeared, gave chase to the murderer, caught him and tied his hands with his own queue. - Officers Colford and Hogan and Constable E. Brow, the latter of whom is still living here, arrested the Chinaman, who was taken to the county jail. - Great excitement was manifested in this city over the murder.  In the evening of the same day a mob of several hundred people gathered at D and Third streets, where it was harangued by persons advocating lynching.  Well-known citizens made counter-speeches, counselling an observance of the law; but the crowd proceeded to the court house.  Here N. D. Rideout, then mayor, addressed it from the court house steps, informing the hot-headed ones that the jail was strongly guarded and that an attempt to force an entrance might result in the loss of valuable lives.  The crowd then moved away and gradually dispersed. - On January 30, 1879, Ah Ben pleaded guilty in District Court before Judge Keyser, and at 1:30 o'clock in the afternoon of March 14th of the same year was hanged in the court house yard in this city by Sheriff H. L. McCoy and Under Sheriff I. N. Aldrich.  A large number of citizens were present.  This was the last of the four judicial hangings which have taken place in Yuba county.

McDONALD, THOMAS

Sacramento Daily Union - 4/14/1877 - A Fearful Mining Disaster - From Thomas Moran, who came down from Smartsville Thursday evening at 9 o'clock, the Marysville Appeal learns the following additional particulars of the terrible disaster occurring Thursday afternoon in the Blue Point Hydraulic mine at Sucker Flat:  The gang of men at the time of the cave were engaged in clearing the debris and making preparations for letting on water for piping, and those killed were caught in an angle of a bank where they could not escape.  After the injured were rescued, twelve hundred inches of water were turned upon the immense pile of dirt and gravel covering the dead miners, and hours were consumed in washing them out.  The disaster caused the greatest excitement in the vicinity, and hundreds of people gathered about the scene of the accident, watching the progress of the work for the recovery of the bodies of the unfortunate men who had been literally buried alive without a moment's warning.  The greatest sympathy was aroused in behalf of those so suddenly bereft of husbands and fathers.  B. F. Henders leaves a wife and two children.  He was for years a clerk in Crary's store.  Deceased was a native of New Jersey, and 42 years of age.  Michael Sweeney was a native of Ireland, county of Sligo, aged 49, and leaves a wife.  Samuel Sleeman, single, aged 30 years.  Michael McWilliams, single, was a native of Ireland, county of Derry, aged 28.  Thomas McDonald, single, was a native of Ireland, county of Antrim, aged 28.  Michael Conway, one of the injured, had his left leg broken, and M. McDONALD, WILLIE

Sacramento Union - Wed 6/22/1853, p2 - Obituary - Died at Cache Creek, on Friday, June 17th, at 12 m. of bronchitis, terminating in inflammation of the bowels, Willie, only son and child of Archibald and Mary McDonald, aged one year within in a few days.  Seldom has the insatiate Destroyer in his remorseless career, struck down so lovely a victim.  The ways of Providence are inscrutable and mysterious indeed.  Young as he was, this little boy gave evidence of a superior mind, blended with great sweetness of disposition.  He seemed, indeed, to be fully aware of the deep interest taken in his welfare, and bore his sufferings with a heroic fortitude far beyond his years.  But why dwell on his virtues and lovely traits of his character?  Who can imagine the anguish inflicted on his doating parents by this terrible bereavement?-the heart-broken mother and disconsolate father.  His death has caused an aching void in the domestic circle, which can never again be replace.  He was the idol, not only of his parents, but of a numerous connection of relatives and friends, who sincerely mourn his early death, and sympathise deeply with the afflicted family.  He has gone to that "bourne from which no traveler returns," but let us hope that his spirit inhabits a brighter and happier world-that final resting place which we are taught to believe remains for the good, the pure and the innocent. - St. Louis papers please copy.

Daily Appeal - May 12, 1895, page 1 - DEATH OF DAN M'GANNEY - The Passing of a Pioneer Smartsville Miner - County Clerk Gordon Bowman telephoned to the "Appeal" office from Smartsville about 8 o'clock last evening that Daniel McGanney had died about a half an hour previous from a stroke of apoplexy. -  The deceased was an old and respected citizen of Smartsville, where he has resided since 1856. - On his first arrival in Smartsville, he worked in some mining claims and was a partner of Tom Conlin for years.  He afterwards embarked in the Blue Point mine, and with his partner, J. P. Pierce, made considerable money which he invested in land. - When a few years ago bad investments made him seek the protection of the courts and go into insolvency it was a great surprise, as he was considered as safe in money matters in his section of the country as the bank. - The deceased was a native of Ireland and about 67 years of age.  He had a large circle of acquaintances in this city who will regret to hear of his death.  He was one of the old landmarks of Smartsville, and his death will also be regretted by his old friends and neighbors. - He leaves a wife, four sons, Edward, who is an attorney in New York, James, Frank and Dan, who reside in Smartsville, and two daughters, Annie and May, to mourn his loss. - Coroner Bevan left for Smartsville last night, but did not know if it would be necessary to hold an inquest as no particulars were received.

Daily Appeal - May 12, 1895, page 4 - DIED:  In Smartsville, May 11th, Daniel McGanney, a native of Ireland, aged 67 years.

Daily Appeal - May 16, 1895, page 1 - Last Saturday evening our little town was shocked to its very center at the news of the sudden death of our friend and neighbor, Daniel McGanney, Sr., who, up to the minute of his death, was in the enjoyment of his usual health.  He had just dined and was amusing his little grandchild, which he idolized, when he suddenly fell forward, and before any member of the family could reach him his spirit had fled and returned to God who gave it.  The deceased was born in Londonderry, Ireland, in July, 1827.  Apoplexy was the cause of death.  He was a man of a rather retiring disposition, yet always ready to render assistance when needed.  A good citizen, an accommodating neighbor, a kind, indulgent father and a most affectionate and devoted husband.  The deceased leaves a wife and six children - four sons and two daughters - to mourn his loss.  The many friends of the sorrow-stricken family extend their sincere sympathy, especially to the heartbroken widow, who will so greatly miss his dear companionship.  The interment took place in the Catholic cemetery Monday afternoon about 3 o'clock.  Rev. Daily Appeal - May 22, 1895, page 1 - THE MCGANNEY INSOLVENCY PROCEEDINGS - In Favor of Contestants - In the matter of the estate of Daniel McGanney, an insolvent debtor, Judge E. A. Davis has made the following order:   Upon the petition of creditors of said insolvent, the assignee of his estate was ordered to render and present his account, after a long lapse of time from his appointment.  When the account was presented it appeared upon its face imperfect and objectionable, showing a balance of an insignificant sum for distribution to the creditors, out of an estate which when it went into the hands of the assignee was estimated could with proper management nearly or quite pay all claims against it.  The said creditors objected to said account and filed a contest against it.  From the history of the administration of the estate, as detailed in the report accompanying it, it appeared to the Court that an investigation of the administration was urgently demanded in the interests of all the creditors and in the interests of justice. - Had not said contest been initiated by said creditors the court would have instituted an investigation upon its own motion either by aid of a referee or otherwise and would have appointed counsel to assist.  The contest was tried, involving much time and labor, and the Court has filed its written opinion therein which verifies the judgment first entertained of the necessity for such investigation, even though it did not result in surcharging said account.  Costs were then allowed the contestants but counsel fees were not then demanded.  Such fees are now asked for.  Findings are signed but no decree is yet signed. - The fund out of which such fees will be paid if allowed is a trust fund in the hands of the court by its assignee.  The proceeding is in equity and the contest was for the benefit of all the creditors, and as before remarked, was prosecuted in the interests of plain justice. - Under the circumstances of the case I cannot but regard it as a proceeding in aid of the Court in the proper administration of said estate, and I cannot regard it as equitable that the nominal contestants should bear the whole expense of the fees of the industrious and able counsel who directed that contest.  I have but little doubt that a Court of Equity may, in its discretion, in such a case as this, not only allow costs to the contestants, but also a reasonable counsel fee. -  I therefore allow to the contestants here $500 counsel fee and direct said assignee to pay the same, and that such allowance be inserted in and as part of said final decree. -  Attorneys for the contestants, W. H. Carlin and M. E. Sanborn. - Attorneys for J. L. N. Shepard, assignee, Messrs. Page, Eels and Swezy

McNAIR, SIERRA N.

Daily Appeal – 7/20/1878, Pg. 3 – DIED.---In Long Bar township, Yuba county, July 17th, Sierra N. McNair, aged 24 years. In the death of this young person, the community in which she lived  and a wide circle of friends have suffered a sad bereavement. The only child of her afflicted parents her death leaves a vacant place in the hitherto unbroken circle of home never more to be filled. Of more than ordinary intelligence, combined with great sweetness of temper and high moral principle, she endeared herself without effort to all who knew her, and has passed away in the morning of her usefulness, leaving many regrets at her early departure, mingled with loving memories of her pure and beautiful life. In the supreme moment of life which is the moment of death, to the passer away the things of the world matter but little. She passed as nothingness, but brighter, purer and holier has been the existence that has fled, so in proportion does love, remembrance and affection follow yearningly beyond the gloom and shadow of the grave. Over the dark river and upon the shining sands of the other shore we doubt not the feet of our young friend have already trod.  (B. S.)

“ We will not forget you
             We would not your name
As a strange language to our ears became.”

McSHANE, JOHN

Weekly Nevada State Journal – 11/06/1875 – Sad Accident. – From a private letter from Grass Valley we learn that a sad accident occurred at Sucker Flat, Yuba county, Cal., at half past five Friday morning resulting the death of Patrick Kerrigan and John McShane, two men employed in the Rose Bar mine. They were working in a shaft about forty feet deep, near a large pipe used for conveying water from Smartsville to the mines near Timbuctoo. The pipes broke, when an immense volume of water rushed down upon the unfortunate men, filling the shaft and killed them instantly. Both bodies came to the surface of the water and were recovered. Kerrigan leaves a large family; McShane was single.  (B. S.)

McVICKER, JOHN

Wheatland Free Press - 11/14/1874, p3 - Terrible Death of John McVicker - The most dreadful and unfortunate accident it has ever been our province to chronicle occurred in Wheatland this week.  About half-past 4 o'clock Monday afternoon John McVicker, a gentleman well known to all old residents of this section (a brother of Dennis McVicker, the noted horse man of this place) met a dreadful and sudden death.  The deceased had lately came down from the mountains, where he has been engaged in the lumber business, and for the last two weeks had been sojourning in Wheatland, preparatory to starting on a trip to the Eastern States.  Monday afternoon Mr. McVicker had completed all his arrangements and was to leave on the accommodation train for San Francisco, accompanied by his brother Dennis.  At the time of the accident the passenger and freight trains were both at the station, the former on the side track and the latter on the main track.  After bidding his friends adieu, Mr. McVicker stepped on the rear platform of one of the passenger coaches and jumped off on to one of the flat cars of the freight train.  Unfortunately, the train was moving so fast that it caused him to lose his balance and fall between the cars.  The lower portion of the body became fastened under the machinery of the car and was dragged a distance of at least thirty yards, being torn and mangled in a frightful manner, before the train was stopped.  After the train had come to a halt and the body had been taken up, the spectacle presented was indeed ghastly and horrible.  Among the track were scattered pieces of flesh and bone in heart-sickening profusion, while the rails were dyed with the blood of the unfortunate victim.  The remains were carefully collected and placed in a large box, and taken into the parlor of the Stage Hotel.  An inquest was held at the hotel Monday evening by Justice Campbell, acting Coroner, when the jury returned the following verdict: - "We, the undersigned jurors, summoned to appear before Wm. L. Campbell, Justice of the Peace and ex-officio Coroner (the Coroner of the county being absent) at Wheatland in Yuba county, in the State of California, to inquire into the cause of the death of John McVicker, a person who was run over and crushed by the freight train on the railroad at said town of Wheatland, having been duly sworn, according to law, and having made such inquisition after inspecting the body and hearing the testimony, do find that said John McVicker was a native of Ireland, aged 42 years, that he came to his death accidentally while attempting to get on the train while in rapid motion, falling between the cars of the freight train going south, on the Oregon branch of the Central Pacific Railroad, at said town of Wheatland, this 9th day of November, A.D. 1874.  And we further find that accommodations are insufficient for passengers to get on or off the freight trains at the station with safety.  All of which we duly certify by this inquisition in writing by us signed this 9th day of November, A.D. 1874. - Signed:  Alex Bowne, Daniel Frazier, David Irwin, Jos. E. Hollingshead, C. Brandt, Thos. Shields, T. W. Judy, H. Lohse, L. Cole. - The funeral which took place Tuesday, was largely attended by friends of the deceased.  The funeral service was preached at the Methodist Church by Rev. W. S. Corwin, after which the corpse was conveyed to the Odd Fellows' Cemetery and interred. - John McVicker was an old citizen of this place, having lived here off and on for the last fifteen or twenty years.  He was a man universally liked by all who knew him.  As above stated, he was born in Ireland, but removed to Canada at a very early age, from which place he came with his brother, Dennis McVicker, to California, settling in Yuba county.

McWILLIAMS, MICHAEL

Brasnan is reported severely injured internally.  Mr. Moran's errand to the city last evening was to order coffins for the dead.  It is reported that no inquest will be held.
