DEBATORS
Much interest has been taken in debating this year. Last year’s teams were composed chiefly of Seniors, hence our present teams are for the most part raw recruits. However, they have worked hard and on the 26th day of October a tryout was held with Miss Lothrop and Mr. Garrison acting as judges. Those selected to debate on November 17th were: Eleanor Gottwals, Paul Carmichael, Thomas Hamlyn and Farwell Brown. The question to be settled was, “Resolved, That the President’s term of office should be six years and he should be ineligible for re-election.” The teams were as follows: At Marysville; Affirmative – Marysville 2; Eleanor Gottwals and Farwell Brown, Sutter 1, Edith Stone and Jessie Thrash. Negative – (At Nevada City); Marysville 3, Paul Carmichael and Thomas Hamlyn. Nevada City 0; Thomas Davis and Mariquita Derby.
The next debate was held on January 12, between Marysville and Gridley. Our team held the affirmative and was composed of Thelma Tipton and Thomas Hamlyn. Gridley, whose team had the negative side, consisted of Mae Kiefer and Ruth Junken. Judges were Mr. Swigart, Mr. Kimbal and Miss Doris Block of Gridley. The question was “Resolved, That American cities with a population exceeding 30,000 should have the city manager plan. The score was 2 to 1 in favor of Gridley.
The other team composed of Eleanor Gottwals and Paul Carmichael journeyed to Auburn where they met a strong team. They met the same fate as the home team and lost by a score of 2 to 1.
Though defeated, we feel that we had a strong team and a very good argument, and we console ourselves with the fact that we have been good losers.
The new city manager plan is un-American and undemocratic. It involves a radical departure from American traditions of local self-government and proposes a step in the direction of municipal autocracy. It would decrease the list of elective officers to a very small number, all other positions begin filled by appointments, presumably for business of a city. Most of these men have no special ability or particular qualification in any line.
