YUBA  COUNTY

CENSUS   RECORDS

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ:

As stated elsewhere on this site, original records are not the most accurate of documents, but they are what we have to work with.  I have endeavored to make these transcriptions as accurate as possible in my interpretation of the (at times) challenging handwriting before me.  ~  Early census takers were not skilled or highly trained persons, and many times names were spelled as they sounded to that person.  Should you find any errors in these pages, please bring them to my attention so that a notation may be made. ~  I will be providing both aspects of these records -  in the order found in the original records, and then in alphabetical form. ~  "*" indicates a letter written that could be several possibilities, or is totally unreadable.   Even if a name looked obviously misspelled, I left it as written.  Blank spaces on the original document are left blank in the transcription.  Ditto marks are written out as to previous entry.  As always, it is best for you to compare these transcriptions to the original films.

Keep checking back until these records are finalized.  Each year's census will be completed as soon as possible, but volunteers are needed to help.  Please email me if you can help or want to know what it entails!

1850 Federal Census - NARA Film # M432-36: (includes portions of what is now Nevada County)  -  For the first half of the pages, these census records are not very accurate from a genealogical standpoint.  It seems the household numbers, ages, place of birth and family groupings were haphazard. The second half (now Nevada County) appears a bit more accurate.  Information is transcribed as appeared on the original records.  Look for alternate spellings, similar looking letters appearing in handwriting (M,N,W - T,F - L,S - B,P  etc)  Although there were Asians reported to have worked the mines in 1850, none were listed in this census.

1860 Federal Census - NARA Film # M653-72 -

1870 Federal Census - NARA Film # M593-93

1880 Federal Census - NARA Film # T9-86

1890 Federal Census - unavailable - The Great Register's around that time frame should help with the missing census.

1900 Federal Census - NARA Film # T623-116

1910 Federal Census - NARA Film # T624-111

1920 Federal Census - NARA Film # T625-153

1930 Federal Census - NARA Film # T626-228

Also look for other records on this site.  City directories and Great Registers are also a good source of finding information.

Kathy -   Due to the large amount of spam I receive, I have added my contact email as an image.  It is not as a link, so you will need to type this address into your email before sending.  Thank you.
