Smartsville Pioneer Cemetery

Photo by Kathy Sedler, Feb. 2005

This cemetery is on the right side of the Smartsville/Beale Road, going toward Beale AFB - soon after it branches off of Hwy 20 near Smartsville.  Many stones are broken and missing.

Feb. 2005: Colleen Driscoll and Kathy Sedler surveyed this cemetery and took photographs.  Only those marked with an 'X' have visible stones.

The first burial was in 1852 of a man from Oregon.  Several as yet unidentified men, died from cholera and were buried in a mass grave.  In 1876 there was a mine cave-in at Sucker Flat, killing 7 men, who were all buried the same day.

Viewing this cemetery, you will see only the few markers left, which I was able to photograph.  There has been much vandalism to this small cemetery, and it appeared that some stones were missing more recently.  The size of the cemetery boundaries indicates that there should be many more burials here than are indicated.
