The Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Smartsville was established sometime in 1864, but the exact date is not known. The earliest recorded burial was that of Agnes Smith (1862-1864). Prior to the establishment of this Catholic Cemetery in Smartsville, remains of Catholics were interred in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Marysville.
You will notice this listing is identified by name, row and grave. Rows are from the bottom of the hill to the top of the hill. Graves are numbered sequentially and run from North to South. The graves are further divided by letter - looking at the grave, they go from right to left.
Go toward Nevada City on Hwy 20 from Marysville. Access
if from an unmarked road - McGanney - on the right before reaching the turn off to Beale AFB .
If coming from Nevada City toward Marysville, you will see the cemetery on the
left hand side up on a hill. A large white cross and many of the monuments
will be noticeable. Take the first road to the left after you see the
cemetery. At the very back of the cemetery is the McGanney family
cemetery. (see separate list). If the road on Hwy 20 is not
accessible, you can access McGanney off of Hammonton-Smartsville Road.
