April/May 2008
YubaRoots sponsored clean up days of the cemetery grounds on April 19 & 20. Many members of the community participated and a large amount of work was done. Several of these persons have come back to volunteer on a regular basis, adopted plots, and continue to be involved in the restoration and preservation of the cemetery.
The Masonic plot and all Masonic burials have been adopted by the local Corinthian lodge - over 100 burials.
Sixteen sprinkler heads were stolen from the cemetery grounds. This senseless vandalism was reported to the Marysville Police Department, and created an added expense for the City in replacing them all. Public Works once again came through quickly and replaced them all in a very short time.
A report was given to Marysville Public Works on the progress at the cemetery from January through April.
A brick laying class was sponsored by YubaRoots and demonstrated by Grant Menghini, local masonry contractor.
Several volunteers worked many long hours this past month to help prepare the cemetery grounds for the Memorial Day celebration, along with working on adopted plots and various projects. Community members have expressed the following: "I've never seen the cemetery look better!" Thank you to all those who have worked so hard.
More markers and stones have been uncovered and brought to the surface, as well as previously unmarked graves now identified. To date, approximately three hundred graves are in need of headstones that currently do not have them and that Kathy has identified. If you would like to help purchase stones, please contact Kathy.
March 2008:
Red brick has been completely moved to the West side of the cemetery in preparation of brick work on plots. Thank you Colleen, Paul and Leroy for your help.
Damage done in the cemetery due to weak oak tree limbs after a wind storm. The limbs and debris were cleared away in just a few days.
Eagle Scout candidate Robert Saykhu from Sacramento Troop #268 adopted 4 lots in Block 12
The area opposite the cemetery where garbage was dumped, has been cleaned up by Kathy.
A decision was made by the Cemetery Commission to request 25 new 100' hoses for use in watering on the cemetery grounds. I submitted the request, and within TWO hours the hoses were deposited in the storage shed and ready for use!! A huge thanks once again to Marysville City Public Works Department and how quickly they came through.
Marysville City Public Works has done a spectacular job on the cemetery grounds these past few years and deserve our gratitude. The grass is regularly mowed, fertilizer applied, weed abatement done, repairs made when requested, faucets updated and repaired, and everything else requested of them has been accomplished in a very short time. A long overdue THANK YOU.
February 2008:
I submitted a verbal proposal to the City Public Works that the upper barrier gate be closed so that vehicles could not drive down into the cemetery, and persons use their vehicles to help scale the fence or to haul garbage into that area and dump it. The gate seems to have worked so far as a deterrent in both regards, while still allowing the public to walk down to the front gates.
January 2008:
On the 2nd, Leroy and Kathy hauled a whopping 48 bags of leaves, weeds, branches and debris from a small front section of the cemetery. By the next day, there were 62 bags awaiting pick up by Public Works.
It was also noted during this time that a truck load of garbage has been dumped opposite the cemetery in the wildlife area. We will be working to get that area cleaned up.
Leroy - a dedicated volunteer at the Marysville City Cemetery since the Nov. 07 clean up - spent many hours cleaning out the inside of the Knight vault. He accomplished this all through the wrought iron gates and what little space there is available between the bars. Leroy did a fantastic job of cleaning the interior and exterior of the Knight vault. The floors are a deep bluish-gray marble when wet, with a white checkerboard pattern.
December 2007:
Leroy and Kathy have been working at getting leaves raked and bagged, weeds pulled, and general clean up done.
Dec. 11th - Vandalism has been found at the cemetery.
Dec. 27th - Eight youth and two adults from Camp Singer began their community project at the cemetery.
November 2007:
On the 3rd YubaRoots organized a clean up day, which was a great success.
Kathy identified the plot of one of the stones which was placed in the pile at the back of the cemetery. John Henry Mayberry's stone is now back on top of his grave.
October 2007:
Kathy has identified several more markers with names of the person buried in those plots. In preparation for the clean up day she created almost 200 wooden markers giving the name, dates of death and birth, and burial marker number, then placed those around the cemetery in their appropriate places on currently unmarked graves.
Work has begun on the Block 12 section of the cemetery, with volunteers probing for buried markers in the first step toward total restoration of that section.
More family plots are being adopted!
June 2007:
Volunteers are needed to help with some preservation efforts at the cemetery. If you are able to donate time, materials or funds, please contact Kathy at the email address image on the bottom of this page.
May 2007:
Brandy Bentley submitted some general shots of the cemetery
Memorial Day - three new Civil War headstones are dedicated by the SUVCW
April 2007:
James Jones and his volunteers have completed the Japanese burial plot. See photos. They did a fantastic job!
In one hour's worth of work on April 18th, 2007 the Feather River Ward Young Women's group achieved a noticeable improvement at the cemetery. They raked and hauled off many bags of leaves.
March 2007:
James Jones has organized an Eagle Scout project, undertaking the restoration of the Japanese burial plot. After only two days of his team probing for buried markers, EIGHT previously unknown graves now have been identified. His group has been working hard on this project. See photos.
December 2006:
Two local women have volunteered to adopt a section of plots in the Eastern section and are working hard to restore, repair and enhance them with their wonderful, generous efforts. So far, the Lars Nelson and Slicer/Baker plots are completed. You will find more on these families as I compile data to add to this site.
I have also begun brick repair and work on the Coult/Swezy plot, and will be compiling data on those burials as well. I plan on adopting several plots as I go along. If you are interested in helping in this effort, please contact me! (See below)
My continuing efforts to fully document this cemetery are still a focus of mine!
I am exploring options for fund-raising, memorial and inexpensive stone placements for unmarked graves, donations of materials needed for restoration projects, and many more exciting plans!
In an effort to more fully document the burials - and to provide information for those visiting the cemetery - I am creating a "walking tour" of the families buried in the plots. There will be small signs placed in the plots with information regarding those persons known buried there. Here is an example of a rough draft I have just completed.
The first of many new stones have arrived (Dec. 15) to place on the unmarked graves of veterans buried here.
May 2006:
More headstones to be added to the cemetery. Another story...
April 2005:
In a field of unknown graves, one more has been identified!! The story...
