Marysville City Cemetery

Eagle Scout Project

March 3, 2007 -

James Jones chose to adopt the Japanese Plot at the Marysville City Cemetery as his community project toward receiving Eagle Scout.

James is a member of Yuba City Troop #33.

To show the dramatic difference that one person's vision can make - here are before and after photos.

Japanese Plot - Mar. 2007

James Jones and his team of volunteers probing the ground to try to locate buried markers.  The markers they are looking for have identifying numbers on them, and when compared to records on the cemetery, will indicate who is buried in a previously unknown grave.

Probing for markers is hard work.  A metal rod is pushed into the ground EVERY 2-3 INCHES over the ENTIRE plot.  Seven sections out of twelve that James had marked off, were completed in just two work days with his group working diligently.  This plot can hold roughly 120 burials, so this was quite an accomplishment!  The first day of work 3 markers were found, and on the second day five more markers were found!

IMPORTANCE OF THIS WORK

This group of volunteers is undertaking a very important project not only for the community, but also for the families of the ancestors who are buried here.  Each and every marker they find I am cross referencing to a database I have created from cemetery records.  These grave sites will now be known and recorded for current and future generations.  A headstone can now be placed by the family if they wish to do so.  The group is participating in the preservation of our history and cultural resources.  All of the descendents of these now identified graves can thank James Jones and his team for their efforts!!
