Clayton Ranch Cemetery

One grave marker stands in this family cemetery – that of William C. Buckelew. The Yuba Feather Museum in Forbestown shared this lone burial information with us.

Clayton Ranch was settled in 1853 by John E. Clayton, and is located off the Challenge Forbestown Cutoff road. There is only one grave seen – a crypt about two feet above ground covered with a 4’x 8’x 4’ marble slab. Mrs. Buckelew was a sister to John E. Clayton and probably why the Buckelew’s came West.

William C. Buckelew

Born 20 Dec. 1819 (1820) - Died 12 Aug. 1869

Thompson & West’s book “History of Yuba County, California” (pp 91, 92) mentions W. C. Buckelew as buying the Clayton Ranch, and that he was the Superintendent of the Sunday School at Sharon Valley. Although there was not an obituary for Mr. Buckelew to be found, the following information was available:

William Cogan Buckalew (var.) was born in New York City, New York or New Jersey. He died at Clayton Ranch, near Brownsville, Yuba County, California. His parents were Dr. Frederick Buckalew Jr. and Maria Cogan. William Buckelew married Joanna Bruce Clayton on 14 Apr. 1844 in Dudleyville, Tallapoosa Co., Alabama. Joanna was born on 17 Oct. 1826 in Butts Co., Georgia and died in 1905 at Oakland, Alameda Co., California. Her parents were James Clayton and Sallie Elliott. In 1850, William and Joanna came with Joshua Elliott Clayton to California.

William and Joanna Buckelew had the following children:

Cornelia Maria – born 30 Aug. 1845 in Dudleyville, Tallapoosa Co., Alabama and died on 18 Aug. 1846 in Carroll Co., Georgia.

Ella Marie – born 26 Jul 1848 in Resaca, Murray Co., Georgia and died in Oct. 1930 at Oakland, Alameda Co., California. She married Francis J. Brearty on 8 Dec. 1870 in Forbestown, Butte Co., California.

William Clayton – born 9 Apr. 1851 in Marin Co., California and died in 1905. He married Annie A. Grugan on 5 Jan. 1876 at Oakland, Alameda Co., California.

Mary Foster – born 28 Aug. 1854 on the Clayton Ranch, Yuba Co., California and died Aug. 1920 at Berkeley, Alameda Co., California. She married Howard L. Branthaver on Oct. 1890 in San Francisco, California.

Lilla (Lilly) Cornelia – born 15 Mar. 1857 in Marysville, Yuba Co., California, and died unknown date and place. She married Phillip Maul in 1887 in Nevada.

Minnie Elliott – born 26 Sep. 1860 on the Clayton Ranch, Yuba Co., California and died in 1938. She married Arthur Kellogg Anthony on 11 Jun. 1891 in San Jose, Santa Clara Co., California.

This is the only grave found. It is shaded by dense tree growth.
