Dear Friends, Nathan & Cynthia.
I reached this place last Saturday night and found Mr. Woodsum at the Hotel. The next morning he took his beautiful team of two horses and carried me through Oroville to Bangor to see Mrs. Sarah E. Kendall, my wife’s sister. We had a delightful visit and returned Monday P.M. Oroville is rather a lifeless, dilapidated town but there is a good deal of mining done there yet and several thousand Chinamen are at work in that vicinity. Bangor is, too, rather a lonely place.
There are 3000 inhabitants or more here and the place is growing rapidly. It is in the midst of the finest farming Country I ever saw. Gen. Bidwell’s magnificent estate of 22000 acres is on the north side of the village. How much wheat he has in all I don’t know (Mr. W. has just told me that he has about 3,000 [sic] in all.) but last night I saw one field of a thousand acres on the left hand side of the street and another on the right hand side of 2000 acres. Another man on the other side of the river has 41000 acres of wheat. Wheat sown in the Fall they consider a sure crop. Chico is 92 ms from Sacramento and this good wheat land extends 60 ms north of us with a railroad running the whole distance. This company have two Steam Mills in the Mts about 40 ms from here. These mills run about 7 months in the year. The logs are all hauled on wheels in the summer. So that in the winter there is usually nothing done. This last winter, however, they have been moving an old mill & building it over new so they have had a crew of 7 or 8 men at work under John Manson all winter. Wages at the mills are from $60 to $125 per month and board. The men that run the circulars have $125. They have two boarding houses at the mills and the women, who superintend them, have $40 per month. These women have each of them a chinaman to help them. The Flume is about 37 ms long and wants 6 ms of being completed. It will be finished in July. It has cost a very large sum of money but it seems as though it must pay for itself in one year. It will save about $10 on every thousand of lumber passing through it. The company have a feed mill here and lumber yard. John Manson’s family are with him at the mills & will remain there all summer. It is very cool & healthy in the Mts. I was quite out of tune at Chicago and all the way through the valley of the Mississippi but gradually improved as I ascended the Mts & am now very well. Board here is $8 per week and provisions are no higher than in Maine. I had a letter from George Monday saying that he expected me at his house Saturday P.M. Had I known that he was at home I should have gone there & stopped over Sunday with him. I left the train 18 ms E of Sacramento at the Junction and then came here. The men who run the circulars here file & set their own says.
I am continually on the look out for a chance for you. The best chance I can see yet is for Cynthia to own one of those boarding houses in the Mts. That would do very well if it was not for the vacation in the winter. I don’t think she would have to work so hard as she does now.
Yrs truly,
S. Johnson
