EIGHTH REGIMENT OF INFANTRY
This regiment was mustered into the United States service March 31, 1865, under the command of Colonel Allen L. Anderson, whose military record was as follows: Appointed Cadet in the Military Academy September 1, 1854; Brevet Second Lieutenant, Second Infantry, July 1, 1859; Second Lieutenant, Fifth Infantry, September 5, 1859; First Lieutenant May 14, 1861; Regimental Adjutant December 31, 1861; Captain December 3, 1862; Colonel Eighth California Infantry March 31, 1865; honorably discharged from the Volunteer service November 7, 1865. Brevet Major February 21, 1862, for gallant and meritorious service at the battle of Valverde, New Mexico; Lieutenant-Colonel March 13, 1865, for gallant and meritorious service during the war; and Brevet Brigadier-General of Volunteers March 13, 1865, for faithful and meritorious service; resigned January 7, 1867.
Headquarters of the regiment was stationed at Alcatraz Island, Cal., until April, 1865; then at Fort Point, Cal., during the balance of its term of service. The field and staff, except the Colonel, were finally mustered out at Fort Point, Cal., October 24, 1865.
COMPANY A
This company was raised at Watsonville by Captain Claremont C. Smith, and was mustered into the United States service November 17, 1864. It was stationed at Fort Point, Cal., until February, 1865; then at Cape Disappointment, mouth of the Columbia River, Washington Territory, until August 17, 1865; then at Fort Dalles, Ore., during the balance of its term of service, and was mustered out at Fort Point, Cal., October 24, 1865. There is no further record of the service performed by this company on file in the Adjutant-General’s office.
COMPANY B
This company was raised by Captain Gaston d’Artois in the city of Sacramento, Cal, and was mustered into the United States service December 5, 1864. It was stationed at Fort Point, Cal., until April 17, 1865, when it was ordered to the mouth of the Columbia River, taking post at Fort Stevens, Or., April 26, 1865. It remained there until October 11, 1865, when it was ordered to Fort Point, Cal., where it remained until mustered out, which took place October 24, 1865.
COMPANY C
This company was raised by Captain Jasper M. Barthelow in San Jose, Cal., and was mustered into the United States service January 28, 1865. It was stationed at Fort Point, Cal., during the whole time of its term of service, where it was mustered out October 24, 1865. There are no further records of the service performed by this company on file in the Adjutant-General’s office.
COMPANY D
This company was raised in San Francisco by Captain Morgan S. Grover, and was mustered into the United States service February 14, 1865. It was stationed at Fort Point, Cal., during the whole of its term of service. It was mustered out at that post October 24, 1865. There are no further records of its service on file in the Adjutant-General’s office.
COMPANY E
This company was raised by Captain Francis D. Todd in San Francisco, and was mustered into the United States service January 25, 1865. It was stationed at Alcatraz Island, Cal., during the whole of its term of service, and it was mustered out at Fort Point, Cal., October 24, 1865. There are no further records of the service performed by this company on file in the Adjutant-General’s office.
COMPANY F
This company was raised in San Francisco by Captain Louis T. Grant, and was mustered into the United States service February 14, 1865. It was stationed at Point Blunt, Angel Island, Cal., during the whole of its term of service. It was mustered out at Fort Point, Cal., October 24, 1865. There are no other records of the service performed by this company on file in the Adjutant-General’s office.
COMPANY G
This company was raised in Marysville, Cal., by Captain Chas. G. Hubbard, and it was mustered into the United States service in San Francisco, January 5, 1865. It was stationed at Alcatraz Island, Cal., during the whole of its term of service, and it was mustered out at Fort Point, Cal., October 24, 1865. No other records of the service performed by this company on file in the Adjutant-General’s office.
COMPANY H
This company was raised by Captain Levi N. Tower in Calaveras County, and it was mustered into the United States service in San Francisco, February 27, 1865. It was stationed at Alcatraz Island and Fort Point during its whole term of service. It was mustered out at Fort Point, Cal., October 24, 1865. . No other records of the service performed by this company on file in the Adjutant-General’s office.
COMPANY I
This company was raised in Yuba and Sierra Counties by Captain Sheldon Burton, and it was mustered into the United States service in San Francisco, February 6, 1865. It was stationed during its whole term of service at Fort Point, Cal., and it was mustered out at that post October 24, 1865. No other records of the service performed by this company are on file in the Adjutant-General’s office.
COMPANY K
This company was raised in Placerville and Sacramento by Captain John R. Crocker, and it was mustered into the United States service in San Francisco, February 25, 1865. It was stationed at Fort Point, Cal., during the whole of its term of service. It was mustered out at that post October 24, 1865. There are no further records of the service performed by this company on file in the Adjutant-General’s office.
